Meanwhile, Tracy is convinced Norman is behind the latest disappearances. Norman searches for his mother all over the house and finds a note from her stating that she is in cabin 12. When Norman arrives at the cabin, he learns it was Duane who took "Mother". Duane confronts him then attempts to blackmail Norman into paying him off, or he'll turn Norman in to the police.

After he enters the Bates home to search for Norman's mother, the shadowy figure emerges from the bedroom and stabs him to death. Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is still manning the desk at the Bates Motel and living with the preserved corpse of his real mother, Emma Spool (Claudia Bryar), whom Norman killed at the end of Psycho II. A heavy rainstorm forces Marion to stop at the Bates Motel just a few miles from Fairvale. Norman Bates, the proprietor, whose Second Empire style house overlooks the motel, registers Marion (who uses an alias) and invites her to eat a light meal with him in the motel's office. When Norman returns to his house to retrieve the food, Marion hears him arguing with his mother about his desire to dine with Marion. After Norman returns, he discusses his hobby as a taxidermist, his mother's "illness", and how people have a "private trap" they want to escape.

As you approach the front steps of the house and take a close-up look you will be struck by the fact that, unlike many of the one-sided sets or facades on the Backlot, the Psycho house actually has four sides and a roof. In light of the Psycho House restoration, I chose to give you guys a little history on this iconic set.
A Second Unit filmed the opening shot of Phoenix, Arizona, where Marion supposedly lives. The shot was filmed at the beginning of December, but Christmas doesn’t get mentioned and the weather seems surprisingly hot. To cover this glitch, the time and date are added over the shot (‘Friday, December the Eleventh...’), but the season is never referred to again.

By the time principal photography started, Hitchcock had moved his offices to the Universal lot and that was where the film was shot. Built in 1960 for the filming of Psycho, the original Psycho House was placed on the hill where the Chicken Ranch now sits overlooking the Bates Motel, which sat where Cabot Cove is today. The large mansion, said to be designed after an Edward Hopper painting titled “House by the Railroad,” set the perfect atmosphere of creepy as it loomed in the background of the motel. The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a two-and-a-half hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is released from a mental institution after 22 years. Norman is taken to his old home, the Bates Motel, with the house behind it on the hill, by Dr. Bill Raymond (Robert Loggia), who assures him everything will be fine. He is introduced to the motel's new manager, Warren Toomey (Dennis Franz). The following day, Norman reports to a pre-arranged job at a nearby diner, run by a kindly old lady named Emma Spool (Claudia Bryar).

He never quite tells you the grisly events that transpired, as if he's at a loss for words. A stunned Mary runs downstairs and is confronted by a deranged Norman, who promises to cover up for "Mother". Mary tries to keep him away, repeatedly stabbing him in the hands and chest. He backs Mary into the fruit cellar to hide and slips on a pile of coal, which avalanches away from the wall, revealing Lila's body hidden behind it. She raises her knife to stab him and is shot to death by the incoming police.
With the park expanding, the house and motel were now on borrowed time. It got the ax to make room for a new children’s attraction, A Day in the Park with Barney. The Psycho house, now unaccompanied by its infamous motel, remained standing. Universal kept the house and motel set intact after production finished. The facades, still with aged and yellow paint, stood as relics of the park’s cinematic history. This standing set was essentially a photo op off the beaten path near the former Hard Rock Café.

Unable to bear the guilt, he mummified his mother's corpse and began treating it as if she were still alive. He recreated his mother as an alternate personality, as jealous and possessive towards Norman as he felt about his mother. The psychiatrist concludes that "Mother" has now submerged Norman's personality.
It is then revealed that Barbara's real name is Sally, and that the teenage girl took her own life 25 years ago and is now trapped in "the other side", along with Tony, and other teens who also committed suicide. She tells Barbara that she has a life worth living for, before leaving with the rest of the group. Barbara leaves the motel the next day, planning to live her life to the fullest. Bates Motel ignores the existence of Psycho II and III (and would in turn be ignored by Psycho IV), with Norman Bates never being released from the mental institution to allow the events of those films.
